Hi everyone.
From now until the new year, I am highlighting my favorite books of 2020. I believe that every book has an audience, but these seven books were my favorites of this year that was unlike any other. They are in no particular order, so let’s get started
We start the honors with Saga. It was a beast of a graphic novel, and it isn’t even done yet. It isn’t for everyone, and it is certainly no kid’s story. However, it just blew me away.
Warning: This review is appropriate for all ages, but the story probably is not. Use your best discretion when selecting books.
In this episode, I went on a jaw-dropping adventure…
Friends, friends, friends.
Welcome back to Teatime Reading where there are books in progress. Until Mallory and Jason (of Binge Mode fame) announced that they’d be doing podcasts about the Graphic Novel epic Saga, I barely knew it existed.
Well, I know about it now, and I’ve been changed by it.
54 issues in, and it feels like I’ve taken an interplanetary shot of heroin because this story felt like so much more than “Star Wars for Grown-Ups”
Saga was sexual, violent, heartbreaking, and transformative. Sometimes, it was many of those qualities at the same time. Hazel’s story felt like a small part of the larger story, and the amount of effort that Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples put into this epic has really shown itself in dramatic and varied ways. Marko and Alana both had unbelievable story arcs, and while they probably had the most explicitly adult material, they also thrilled, terrified, and captivated me from beginning to half-way (since that’s where we are at the moment).
There was a lot for me to experience and feel, and I do not to even hint at the magic of this story because I want you to read it too.
I’ll just say this much. This is one of the best adventures that I’ve read in 2020. It was honestly an instant nominee for my Best of 2020 list (which is probably where you’re reading this review first), and even though this book is not a children’s book by any stretch, it deserves to be here.
Saga is a masterpiece, and there is another half of the story left to be told. I don’t know how I’m going to deal with the remaining fifty-plus issues, but I was simply blown away by the storytelling, the visuals, the depth of emotion, and the overall effect of Saga.
Bravo!!!!
That’s all for today. Saga is one of those rare stories that I urge you to jump into with both feet because I didn’t regret it at all.
Even if it takes a while for the authors to finish the story, it’s more than worth it.
Until next time, keep your tea close and your bookmarks closer.
Peace, Love, Pages.
