946: Uncommon Favor was an excellent memoir
In this episode, I realized just how remarkable Dawn Staley was…

As I made my way on my roadtrip over the last few weeks, I had a lot of time to listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Last time, I discussed the High Republic audio drama Tempest Breaker, and I pivoted over to nonfiction with the remarkably moving memoir by legendary basketball player and coach Dawn Staley: Uncommon Favor.
The thing I have learned about memoirs is that they are incredibly difficult to review because they are, at the end of the day, a person’s story. Dawn Staley has been iconic for many decades, but I primarily knew her as a great coach at the University of South Carolina.
This memoir pulled back so many layers with her upbringing in Philadelphia, her collegiate, pro, and olympic playing days, and the transition to coaching. I had no idea that she coached at Temple and played in the WNBA for nearly half a decade simultaneously.
Most surprising was the deep look into Dawn’s personality, her introversion and her growth through the years. I loved learning about someone that I’ve seen on television for so many years during the college basketball season and March Madness.
If you like memoirs, this was a gem. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
