870: The Demigods Academy series was fine, until I got bored
In this episode, I was looking for mythology, and I still was a little underwhelmed…
Friends, friends, friends.
Welcome back to Teatime Reading where there are books in progress.
Let me start by saying that I don’t expect every book to be amazing. Obviously, I’d like to pick books that I think I’d like. I don’t think that anyone is intentionally intending to select unpleasant experiences, or even boring ones.
I won’t even say that I was bored by the six Demigods Academy books. I simply bumped up against a challenging truth: I couldn’t help but compare this series to Percy Jackson and another series that I read a few years ago called The Girl in the Box.
I can’t exactly say why I felt like comparing Demigods Academy to The Girl in the Box. In most ways, I found it much more similar to a grown up Percy Jackson. But there was something that made me compare this to the books of Sienna Nealon.
Melany Richmond was a decent protagonist, and I liked that the take on the Greek Gods and Titans was a different one to the world that Rick Riordan spun.
I just felt like I was going through the motions after the first two or three books in this series. Each installment was short, barely over 200 pages, and that was a truly mixed bag. It made the pace intense, but the room for story challenging.
By the end of the sixth book, I knew I was in one of two places with the series. There were 12 books, and I needed a break. Whether I come back to the series or not will depend on how I feel about the stories after a year or so.
Right now, I am honestly drained by the last book, and I need time.
That also means that I can’t really decide whether this series is worth recommending. Unfortunately, if I have to debate about it that deeply, it’s probably a pass for me.
I feel good about not recommending Demigods Academy for the time being, but who knows how things will age for me.
