758: Philosophy of Longevity
In this episode, I got some useful nuggets out of a really easy read…
Friends, friends, friends.
Welcome back to Teatime Reading where there are books in progress.
When I heard about the Japanese term Ikigai, I couldn’t help but take a mental trip back to one of my favorite YouTube videos from the guys at Top Gear.
Upon a quick rewatch of the Mazda MX-5 review, I quickly realized that Richard Hammond was talking about Jinba Ittai, which roughly translates to Horse and Rider in perfect Harmony, at least according to the video.
If all of this seems a little silly, you’d be right. I confused Ikigai with a different Japanese term, and why does this matter at all?
In the book titled Ikigai, I was intrigued and entertained by the stories and the principles. Yes, this book was heavily focused on the art of aging well and living well deep into your life and there were several principles that I noticed throughout the book.
Stay active; don’t retire.
Take it slow.
Don’t fill your stomach.
Surround yourself with good friends.
Get in shape for your next birthday.
Smile
Reconnect with nature.
Give thanks.
Live in the moment.
Ikigai really felt like it focused on purpose, peace, socialization, and nature. I appreciated quite a lot of what it had to say, but it was also a very light, surface-level book, at least to me.
What it actually did was force me to think about looking for more detailed books on this philosophy.
Was it an easy read? Yes. Thought-provoking? Most definitely. Is it a must-read? Not so much.
Until next time, keep your bookmarks close.
