Friends, friends, friends.
Welcome back to Teatime Reading where there are books in progress.
Today is another cookbook day. I will say that I had not heard of Christine Sahadi Whelan before opening her latest book Flavors of the Sun. As I write these words, I have just found out about the 100-plus-years of Sahadi’s, the market store that was such a fixture, first in Manhattan and later in Brooklyn.
This cookbook was very tempting. As I start to think about the way I’d like to get into cooking in the coming years, I’ve used cookbooks as inspiration. Flavors of the Sun didn’t automatically make me desperate to start cooking creative recipes, but it was another piece in the puzzle that I like to think of as The Future Cooking Lexicon.
The organization of this book was interestingly focused on the numerous ways to use specific tastes like bright, savory, spiced, nutty, and sweet and I was not expecting that since most cookbooks focus on appetizers, soups and salads, entrees, desserts, and so on. This unique organization made the book a little harder to envision as a future resource, but it made for a very readable book and I loved looking at the recipes.
Flavors of the Sun, then, was a good cookbook with great visuals and interesting recipes. As a vegetarian, some of them were instantly identifiable as “not for me”, but I enjoyed this book overall.
That’s all for today. Until next time, keep your bookmarks close.
Peace, Love, Pages.
